CEB: Box 3.2 Electoral assistance 23.02.2017

The electoral assistance provided by the UN system can be grouped into three categories: technical assistance; the organization and conduct of elections; and observation or monitoring of elections and participation, where elections are expected to play a significant role in the peacebuilding phase of political negotiations. While technical assistance tends to be provided in politically stable contexts, the organization and conduct of elections takes place almost exclusively in post-conflict conditions.

Gender. Collaboration across the UN system on gender has grown in the context of system-wide preparations for the Beijing Conference and its aftermath. The focus has been on the advancement of women and on implementing the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women. Decisive steps to strengthen the UN human rights machinery, backing the action plan and doubling the budget of the High Commissioner. Agreement to establish a UN Human Rights Council during the coming year. Reaffirmation of democracy as a universal value, and welcome for new Democracy Fund which has already received pledges of $32 million from 13 countries. Commitment to eliminate pervasive gender discrimination, such as inequalities in education and ownership of property, violence against women and girls and to end impunity for such violence.

CEB: Working together to promote human rights, democracy and good governance 23.02.2017

The Millennium Declaration commits the nations of the world “to promote democracy and strengthen the rule of law, as well as respect for all internationally recognized human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the right to development.” In it, world leaders resolve “to strengthen the capacity of all our countries to implement the principles and practices of democracy and respect for human rights.”

CEB: One United Nations: Catalyst for Progress and Change 15.06.2016

CEB’s contribution to the preparatory process of the 2005 World Summit culminated in the publication of "One United Nations: Catalyst for Progress and Change — How the Millennium Declaration is Changing the Way the United Nations System Works", which was launched at the July 2005 session of the Economic and Social Council and was commended by the President of the Economic and Social Council to the Summit.

The Africa Renewal information programme, produced by the Africa Section of the United Nations Department of Public Information, provides up-to-date information and analysis of the major economic and development challenges facing Africa today. Among the major items it produces is the renowned magazine, Africa Renewal (formerly Africa Recovery), which first appeared in 1987. It also produces a range of public information materials, including backgrounders, press releases and feature articles.
