Secretary of CEB and Director of the CEB Secretariat
Ms. Simona Petrova serves as Secretary of CEB. She is also Director of the CEB Secretariat, a position she has held since April 2012. Prior to joining the CEB, she was a Principal Officer in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General since May 2008. In this capacity she has been working as adviser to the Secretary-General on management issues, as well as Chief of Office for the Deputy Chef de Cabinet.
Simona Petrova, a national of Bulgaria, has over 25 years of experience in the UN system. Prior to that, from 2006 to 2008, Ms. Petrova was Chief of Office of the UN Under-Secretary-General for Management, Alicia Barcena. In 2006, she was also a member of the initial team establishing the UN Peacebuilding Support Office.
Ms. Petrova joined the UN Secretariat in 1998 and until 2005 worked in the Office for Central Support Services. She was also part of the Secretary-General’s Capital Master Plan team in its initial phase and participated in the consultative process with member states and the Host Government.
From 1992 to 1998, Ms. Petrova served in various capacities in the UN Development Programme (UNDP). She was Deputy Chief of Division in the Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS from 1994 to 1996 with direct country responsibilities for the five Central Asian Republics and thematic responsibilities for the regional UNDP programmes on aid management, public administration and governance.
Appointed as the first Area Officer for the CIS countries in UNDP immediately after their formal admission as UN members in 1992, Ms. Petrova traveled extensively between 1992 and 1994 to all the CIS countries for negotiations with their Governments on the establishment of UN offices, project formulation, fund-raising and contacts with bi-lateral donors.
Prior to joining UNDP, Ms. Petrova worked in the Bulgarian National Commission for UNESCO. She holds an M.A.L.D. in international law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Boston. Ms. Petrova is married and has one daughter.
